Jabber For Mac Software

In order to use your new Jabber Softphone, if you do not have it already installed, you will need to install Cisco Jabber.

Cisco Jabber is a unified communications program that lets you access presence, instant messaging (IM), voice.

Cisco Jabber is available for PC, Mac, Android, iOS. The latest PC and Mac clients are available here:

  • Cisco Jabber for Windows - (software is available in software center)
  • Cisco Jabber for Mac – (software is available in software center)

Jabber is provided at no charge as part of the telecommunications service. Get started Download and Install Jabber. To get started, you’ll need to download and install the Jabber application. Select your platform. Download Jabber for Windows; Download Jabber for Mac; Download Jabber for iOS (iPhone or iPad) Download Jabber for Android; Use Jabber. View the availability of contacts within and outside of your organization on your Mac desktop. Business-class voice and video Get secure, reliable communications with soft-phone features using Cisco Jabber for Mac, including HD voice and video, plus desktop sharing.

The mobile device clients (for Android and iOS) are available on their respective Application Stores (Google Play or App Store).

Once the application is installed, you will need to sign in.

If it is your first time using Cisco Jabber on a device, you may need to enter your SMU email address (ex. John.Smith@samuelmerritt.edu) after opening the application. You should then be directed to a SMU login page where you can enter your SMU Username and SMU Password, then click “Log In”.

Upon signing in, you will have access to the instant messaging and WebEx functions of Cisco Jabber.

In order to use the Cisco Jabber program as a phone, you need to go into the options/settings and enter your SMU Username and SMU Password under the Phone Services section. The phone functions of Cisco Jabber are currently only available on campus or when connected to the VPN.

  • On Windows clients, you can click File->Options->Accounts and enter your credentials.
  • On Mac clients, open the preferences window, select Accounts, select Phone Services, then enter your credentials.

These credentials are not automatically updated so if you change your SMU password, you will need to update the password in Cisco Jabber as well.

This article covers the installation process for Cisco Jabber on a Mac.

1. Open Self Service app
3. Click Install button

1. Download the Cisco Jabber Mac installer from here.Note: If prompted, allow the download.
2. Find the Cisco Jabber Mac package in Downloads and double-tap to start installing.

3. Select Continue on the Welcome to the Cisco Jabber Installer window.

6. Select Install.

7. Enter your Mac password. You will need to be a local administrator.


9. You may click Move to Trash for the installer when prompted.

10. Open Applications folder in Finder and double -tap Cisco Jabber.

11. Click Allow for the notifications prompt in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
12. Enter your UWGB email address and select Continue.


14. Select OK to the Access Required popup window.

15. Select Open System Preferences on the Screen Recording popup window.

16. In System Preferences window, check the box for Cisco Jabber.Note: If you already had another page open in System Preferences, then you will need to go back to the categories, select Security & Privacy, then click the Privacy tab, then click on Screen Recording in the left list and check the box for Cisco Jabber on the right.

18. Open Cisco Jabber application again.
19. Select the Jabber menu and select Preferences.

20. On the General tab, you may want to check the box to Start Cisco Jabber when my computer starts.

21. Select the Audio/Video icon at the top of the Preferences window.

22. Select OK on the Cisco Jabber would like to access your microphone window.

Note: If you plan to use a headset or something other than the built-in microphone or speakers, you can change them on this Audio tab.

24. Select OK on the Cisco Jabber would like to access your camera window.

25. Select the red circle to close the Preferences window
26. Select the computer and phone icon at the bottom of the contacts list.
27. Change Device for Calls to Computer.
