Sanders, William 'Dave':(October 22, 1951 - April 20, 1999): William Sanders was an aspiring person who taught business for 25 years and coached the girls basketball and softball teams at Columbine High School. Coach Sanders along with several other staff members heroically saved an untold numbers of lives by redirecting students out of the cafeteria and out of the direct path of the shooters. As Coach Sanders was telling students to get in and remain in the classrooms out of danger, he was shot from behind by Eric Harris. Coach Sanders managed to get himself into a science classroom where students were taking an exam. Students administered first aid and alerted police that their teacher was badly hurt and needed medical attention; however, he died nearly three hours later from blood loss from gunshot wounds to the neck and torso while waiting for help that never arrived. His last words which he told his students was 'Tell my family I love them.' Given his heroic efforts, he posthumously received the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage.
